Online Dating: Are We Still Taking the Time to Know Each Other?

Online dating has transformed how people meet. It has created possibilities that did not exist before, allowing us to connect with people outside our usual social circles, communities, and routines. Yet it has also changed something more subtle: the way we experience other people.

Dating apps encourage speed. We look, evaluate, swipe, match, message, and often move on—all within a very short period of time. There is always another profile waiting. As a result, people can begin to feel less like individuals to discover and more like possibilities to compare.

But getting to know someone takes time.

Attraction may be immediate, but intimacy rarely is. People reveal themselves gradually—in the way they respond to disappointment, tolerate difference, repair misunderstandings, express affection, or allow themselves to become vulnerable. These parts of a person cannot be captured in a photograph, a short biography, or even the first few dates.

From a depth-psychology perspective, we also never approach another person as a completely blank slate. We bring our own histories, longings, fears, expectations, and past relationships with us. Sometimes we quickly idealize someone because they seem to represent what we have been searching for. At other times, we dismiss someone because they do not immediately produce the feeling we expected.

Modern dating can intensify both tendencies. When alternatives appear endless, uncertainty becomes harder to tolerate. A small disappointment may be interpreted as evidence that someone is “not right,” rather than as part of the ordinary process of discovering who another person actually is.

Compatibility matters, of course. Not every relationship should be pursued. But there is a difference between recognizing genuine incompatibility and expecting another person to immediately fit an internal image of the ideal partner.

Perhaps one of the challenges of dating today is learning to remain curious a little longer.

Relationships develop in the space between two imperfect people who gradually become known to one another. Sometimes connection begins not with certainty or instant intensity, but with enough interest to stay, wonder, and discover who the person in front of us might actually be.
